About Edgar A. Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 and died in 1849.

The show takes place from the year 1836 until Poe's death.

Timeline

1836 – Poe works for the magazine, The Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond, Virginia. He marries his first cousin Virginia. She is 13 and he is 22.

1837 – Poe, Virginia and her mother Maria move to New York after Poe has a falling out with his boss at The Southern Literary Messenger.

1838 – The family moves to Philadelphia, and Poe becomes editor of Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine.

1842 – Virginia becomes sick with tuberculosis.

1843 –Poe publishes The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-tale Heart and The Black Cat.

1844 – Poe living in New York becomes a sensation among the New York Literati reciting his poem The Raven. (A poem that earned him only $15.)

1847 – Virginia dies of tuberculosis.

1849 – Poe writes Annabel Lee. The poem first appears as part of Poe’s obituary two days after the poet’s death.
